Background:
I have been pursuing my interest in Art since I was a child growing up in an artistic environment. At a tender age, Art was to me a hobby. Now I define Art not only as a profession but also as a religion I practice and believe in.
I entered the Ultimate School of Art (USA) in Mamprobi Accra where I studied advanced painting, graphic design and textile design. Out of school I specialized in painting and also took an interest in painting murals as well as paintings on canvas. I paint mainly in acrylics, oils, water color and ink.
Generally, the themes for my works are inspired by my spiritual and philosophical outlook on life, the environment which I live in and also people, specially African women. What excites me about them is their courage, ingenuity, and industrious and creative nature as shown in their day to day lives.
Harmonious colors with rudimentary rhythms of art are what characterize my paintings and murals My works also emphasize important compositional principles such as form, color gradation and perspective.
I am eclectic. With ease I combine Impressionism, Expressionism and Cubism with a very strong relation to my cultural setting, developing what I call "Fabilism."
Artist's Statement:
My painting are about communication. They are a visual vocabulary without narration. Each painting or mural has a story behind it. I attach to them very strong spiritual and philosophical meaning. A lot of thought goes into the choosing of a theme for each painting or mural. The choice of a theme very much depends on the mood I am in, what I am thinking of, and what has informed my thinking in terms of what I have heard, read and observed. With a particular theme in mind I run wild picking up images from various Ghanaian and African cultural settings.
Like moods the images sometimes change when they arrive on the final surface of their destination, but the theme remains unchanged. For me, technique is not an end in itself, but only a means to an end. Therefore, my emphasis is never on any particular technique but a combination of techniques to achieve my ultimate goal, that is, telling the story behind my works.
Each person adds their own perspective to any abstract work of art that I do. Even though there are some obvious images in most of my works, people bring to them varying interpretations. No interpretation is ever wrong because like verbal communication, understanding varies but here their is no miscommunication.
I hope time will prove my stories worth the telling.
