Youth in Ghana
The expense of school in Ghana is subsidized by the government through the 9th grade, making elementary and junior high school accessible to almost all children. All high schools in Ghana are private boarding schools where students live during the semester, returning home over holidays and summer break.
The expense of these schools, however, falls on families or individual teens and tuiton is more than many families can afford. As a result, the education of many ends at 9th grade. Anansi makes it possible for qualified students without financial means to receive a high school education by providing tuition, assisting with registration, and transportation to school.
Without a high school degree, steady employment is extremely difficult to obtain. Teens out of school try to support themselves, and sometimes entire families, by peddling merchandise on crowded streets. Income is unreliable and there is no protection against exploitation or crime.
It is a shame that so many bright minds are restrained by the demands day-to-day survival — and it is Anansi's mission to give Ghana's youth the opportunity to explore their potential and live better lives.
