To: my mother, Frances Cowan Heugh, who believed I could do anything and who provided me with a creative artistic environment surrounded by her paintings; to my uncle, Dr.Thomas Cowan who gave me a watchmaker's lathe, a raft trip through the Grand Canyon, and whose craftsmanship has been inspirational; to Mr. Michael Remetz, a wonderful teacher who lifted me from my unfathoming despair of ninth grade algebra, and almost magically engendered in me an aptitude for analytic geometry, and then opened a mental blind to the wonders of physics; to Torrey and Jean Dodson, who have provided my parents with limitless generosity and good humor, and who became my mother's best friends in her last years; and finally to my father, James Heugh, who's encouragement, kind patience, and artistic skill continue to be inspirational, and who taught me that sharp tools are safer tools, and allowed me access to them at a frightfully early age - thank you.
