When Spring Comes To The Library

When Spring comes to the library

The pollen count just soars

And with our windows sealed up tight

It’s worse than out of doors

The patrons drag in mud although

The day is clear and dry

We don’t know how they do that

And it’s better not to pry

When Spring comes to the children’s room

The little dears attack

Their folks are on the tennis courts

Or jogging down the track

If we call Social Services

Or toss ‘em in the street

I’m guessing our next levy vote

Will go down in defeat

The patrons mark the equinox

By hiding eggs and changing clocks

And for umbrellas they will use

Whichever big art books they choose

When Spring comes to the reading room

A young man’s fancy turns

To sex ed books and swimsuit issues

See how much he learns

Cause he sneaks with his girlfriend

To a study room that’s free

Where we hung all the posters

About AIDS and pregnancy

When Spring comes to the reference desk

Mid-April brings us swarms

Of wild-eyed filers searching for

The right extension forms

And rebels prowl the tax code

For a typo or  a blot

That proves that they don’t have to pay;

And it’s all a Commie plot

The high school kids have papers due

Before they graduate

So Mom's in doing research

While her cherub’s on a date

When Spring comes to the catalog

The stations all are booked

By raincoats printing porno that

The filters overlooked

The nerds regret the Internet

Has made me obsolete

And then they beg for help when

Google goes down in defeat

When Spring comes to the check-out desk

The travel books all roam

And garden guides go off on digs

With those who stayed at home

I see the sun outside the door

It’s such a rotten deal

How come it’s always raining

When I’m in the bookmobile?
