William GOUDY (Unknown1) was born about 1715. William died before 6 Jun 1769 in Cumberland Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. He married Shusana (probably Susanna) Unknown (possibly Boyd) before 1736. Shusana/Susanna was still living when William's estate inventory was filed in York County in Jun 1769.
They had 3 children:
This William Goudy may be the William Goudy who died before 6 Jan 1812 in Westmoreland Co, PA, leaving to survive him wife Mary, sons Robert and John and daughters Margaret I and Susanna S. Mary’s will was dated 19 Mar 1825 and recorded in Westormoreland Co, PA 16 Oct 1826.
It is also possible this William Goudy was the William Goudy who went to North Carolina and became a prominent State Senator.
William GOUDY’s birth year is not known. It is assumed he was approximately 50-60 years of age when he died in 1769. At least one of his surviving children was still a minor at the time of his death, making it possible there was at least a fourth child not named in the York Co records. His two sons, William and John, were named administrators of his estate. William died before 6 Jun 1769 when a sworn statement was made and subscribed to before Justice Saml Edie regarding the inventory of his estate. William’s wife Shusana certified on 7 Jun 1769 that her sons John and William GOUDY had her permission to administer the estate of her husband. The administrator’s bond also bears the signatures of Moses Boyd, John Buchanan and Saml Johnston. The inventory, dated 7 Jun 1769, was recorded in York County, PA court records on 9 Jun 1769 and bears the signatures of John Mann, John Goudy and J. S. McFerran.
William’s name was first mentioned in York Co, PA records in 1749 and 1750/51, when he was called to be a Constable in Cumberland Twp. On both 4 Apr 1750 and 31 Jul 1750, William was appointed to serve on a Grand Jury . He signed a Road Petition as an inhabitant of Cumberland Twp in Jan 1758. And in 1762 is listed on the Cumberland Twp tax rolls . On 1 Dec 1767 William, John Jun, and John are listed on the Cumberland Twp tax rolls for the year 1768. The 1769 tax rolls list the William GOWDY Estate. In 1771 John GOUDY and William GOUDY (William’s name is crossed through) are listed on the tax rolls of Huntingdon Twp in York Co. And the 1774/75 Cumberland Twp tax rolls list John GOUDY Snr, John GOUDY Junr and William GOUDY dec’d as well as an entry “and to Property”.
As indicated, no will was located for William but additional evidence of his children was found in a deed from John GOUDY of Cumberland Twp and William GOUDY of same Township to Jacob Arndt recorded 13 Oct 1780 which says that William GOUDY Senr died in the year 1769 leaving children John, William and Ann (who married William KELSEY). This deed was for land bounded by H Lantmire, Henry Shallaberger, Widow Ferguson, Nicholas Tittinger, Alexander Mahlon, William EAKMAN and Jacob Crias. John and William had paid to Ann GOUDY KELSEY, by instrument bearing date 25 Feb 1769, a sum for her share of the land. There is also a deed from William GOUDY to Barnabas Lantmire recorded 16 Sep 1780 which states that William GOUDY was one of the children of William GOUDY Senior.
Except as noted in deed records, William’s name is not mentioned again until his brother John dies in 1800 in Adams Co. John's will leaves portions of his estate to his nephews John and William GOUDY, both sons of William GOUDY. This same estate was mentioned again in the will of John GOUDY who died in Greene Co, OH in 1807.
