GENERATION NO. 3

John GOUDY (William2, Unknown1) was born Jul 1736. John died 15 Nov 1807 in Greene County, Ohio, and was buried in Pioneer Cemetery, Greene County, Ohio. He married Ann _______ who was born in 1743. Ann died 4 Mar 1816 in Greene County, Ohio, and was also buried in Pioneer Cemetery.

They had 4 children:

  1. John GOUDY, who may be the John Sr in Greene Township, Clark Co, OH census records of 1820, 1830 and 1840 and was born between 1770 and 1775.
  2. William GOUDY, born before 1775 in Pennsylvania, died before 3 Sep 1828.
  3. Ann GOUDY, born 1776 in Pennsylvania. She married James BULL 8 Nov 1804 in Greene Co, OH. James was born in 1776 in Virginia, a son of William Bull. James and Ann were parents of eight children – William Hunter Bull, John Goudy Bull, Susanna Bull who married James Turnbull, James Law Bull, Robert Scott Bull, Amos S Bull, and Andrew Rankin Bull.
  4. Andrew GOWDY, born 23 Aug 1777, died 27 Sep 1818.

John’s will dated 21 Oct 1807 is found in the will records of Greene Co, OH. The estate inventory completed 7 Dec 1807 mentions his wife Ann, son Andrew, little grandson John (son of Andrew), and sons William and John. Executors were James Barrett, Esq and John Bigger, Senr of Montgomery Co, OH. In his will, John stated "Í give and bequeath unto my loving wife Ann for her support during her natural life my mantion (sic) house together with the plantation whereon I now live…and after her decease I will the plantation shall belong to my son Andrew his heirs and assigns forever.” The statement of chattel property was dated 8 Jan 1808 with numerous buyers and cash in the hands of William Hamilton for property in York County, PA $266.66; and cash in the hands of William Gowdy $40.00.

John appears on the tax rolls of York Co, PA in the years 1762, 1767, 1771 and 1774.

Records in the Pennsylvania Archives indicate John served during the Revolutionary War. His name appears on the Roll of the Ninth Company which states that on March 20, 1777, John Goudy is age 42, 5 feet 5 and 3/4 inches. He is also listed on several other PA muster rolls.

John Goudy and his son William probably lived in Kentucky for a few years as shown in a Petition of Inhabitants of Fayette Co dated 14 Nov 1789 wherein the people requested that a lot of land be reserved for a courthouse. Among the signatures were John Bigger and John Goudy. John and William Goudy are also found on the Fayette Co tax records of 1790, 1791, 1792, and 1793.

John and William's early arrival in Ohio is documented in several places:

bulletTerritorial papers of the U.S. for The Territory Northwest of the River Ohio 1787-1803 have a 13 Jul 1799 Petition to Congress by Citizens of Hamilton Co regarding Symmes tract. Signatures include William Gowdy, John Bigger, and John Bigger, Jr. Another petition, not dated but believed to have been written about July 13, 1799 included signatures of John Gaudy and William Gaudy. A third petition dated Jan 1800 praying for the sale of one-half of Sec 26 for the purposes of building a mill was also signed by William Gaudy and John Gaudy.
bulletThe History of Springfield in Clark Co, OH which states “Early settlers in this township were William and John GOUDY, who came in 1808; they were natives of Pennsylvania, who first settled in Hamilton County, Ohio in 1803, whence they came to Clark.”

bulletThe History of Greene Co, OH by Hon M A Broadstone says that “On Nov 8 1804 he (James BULL) was united in marriage to Ann GOWDY, dau of John and Ann GOWDY, who also had come up from Kentucky.”

John appeared on the Greene Co, Ohio tax rolls of 1806, 1807, and 1808. In 1809, the land was listed in his son Andrew's name.
