GENERATION NO. 6

Nancy Patton GOWDY (John5, William4, John3, William2, Unknown1) was born 17 Jun 1822 in Clark County, Ohio. Nancy died 20 Nov 1898 in Pawnee City, Pawnee County, Nebraska. She married Joseph BROWN 2 Mar 1843 in Clark County, Ohio. He was born 7 Nov 1822 in Greene County, Ohio, the son of James M. BROWN and Mary STEWART. Joseph died 2 Aug 1902 in Pawnee City, Pawnee County, Nebraska.

They had 6 children:

  1. John Gowdy BROWN, born 10 Jul 1844 in OH, died 21 Jan 1898. He married Martha GIBSON on 8 Nov 1865.
  2. James Alexander BROWN, born 1 Jul 1849 in OH, died 10 Feb 1937. He married first to Florence Frances CONNOR on 3 Feb 1876 at Wataga, Knox Co, Illinois. Florence was born 9 Nov 1851 in Mercer Co, Illinois to parents Thomas C. CONNOR and Abigail BURNETT. She died 27 Apr 1884 in Adams Co, Iowa. James married second to Nora A. REEVE on 2 Mar 1886. Nora was born 28 Sep 1860 in Henry Co, Illinois and died 11 Sep 1934.
  3. William Stewart BROWN, born 28 Feb 1852 in OH, died 1 Sep 1925.
  4. Ann BROWN, born 7 Dec 1854 in OH, died 29 Jan 1938. Ann married Zenas E. HOUGH on 30 Mar 1875. Zenas was born 25 Dec 1847 in Warren Co, Illinois and died in Wabaunsee Co, Kansas. Both are buried at Eskridge, Wabaunsee, Kansas.
  5. Perry BROWN, born 4 Dec 1857 in OH and died young.
  6. Infant BROWN, born 5 Sep 1860 in IL.

After Nancy’s death, Joseph married (2) Mary TURNER 17 Dec 1899. She was born 5 Sep 1834 in Fairfield Co, OH.

Andrew Brown said in his biography of the Brown family, “After his marriage, Joseph BROWN learned the blacksmith trade and settled near Sidney, Shelby County, OH. About 1850 he removed to Henderson Co, IL to a farm where they lived until 1880 when he sold this farm and lived for several years in Monmouth. In 1886 he moved to Pawnee City, NE. He married the 2nd time 17 Dec 1899 to Mary Turner. On the breaking out of the Civil War he enlisted in Co K, 84 Reg IL Vol Inf and served 3 years. Was in the battles around Nashville and Atlanta and was with Sherman's Army on its famous March from Atlanta to the Sea. Mr Brown lived a retired life while at Pawnee, NE was a well read man and a good speaker before an audience, was a member of the Presbyterian Church and Republican party.”

Joseph Brown's Civil War Pension dated 5 Jul 1898 stated he enlisted in the service at Bigsville (sic), Henderson Co, Illinois on 8 Aug 1862 as a Private in Comp K of the 84th Reg of Illinois Inft, commanded by John B. McGaw and was discharged at Camp Harker, Tennessee on 8 Jun 1865. His children still living at the time of application were James A. Brown born 1 Jul 1849; William S. Brown born 5 Dec 1852 and Ann Brown Hogue born 2 Dec 1855.
