Silas GLOVER and John WILEY (probably Elizabeth's brother) were well known for their bridge building capabilities as told in a history of Preble County, Ohio by Ione Sell Hiestand and Audrey Shelton Gilbert and published in 1992 by the Preble County Historical Society. It states that "The 'Old Red Bridge' was a two-lane covered wooden bridge constructed by local contractors John WILEY and Silas GLOVER in 1847... The bridge spanned Four Mile Creek on the north edge of Fairhaven with a sign south of the entrance declaring: The genious of man is hard to discover, This bridge was built by Wiley and Glover."

As is evidenced by the death of his first wife, Silas had left Abbeville District, South Caroline and settled in Preble Co by early 1833. The first deed for land purchased by Silas was dated 6 Apr 1836. There were a number of land transactions but the last deed is dated 2 Oct 1857. Church records tell us that Silas and family were in Warren Co, Illinois by 1860 and by 1870 they were settled in Young America in Warren Co.

Generation 3.

William Mason GLOVER was born 14 Nov 1828 in Abbeville Co, South Carolina, died 16 May 1903 in Hutchinson, Reno Co, Kansas and is buried in the Hutchinson East Side Cemetery. He married Adeline CONNER on 10 Feb 1853 in Monmouth, Warren Co, Illinois. Adeline was born 15 Sep 1827 in Rockbridge Co, Virginia to Dennis and Mary (BEERS) CONNER, and died 20 Apr 1917 in Hutchinson, Reno Co, Kansas. She was buried beside her husband in the Hutchinson East Side Cemetery.

They had the following children:

  1. Joseph Leroy GLOVER born 3 Jul 1854  and died 18 Oct 1854 in Keithsburg, Warren Co, Illinois.
  2. Clara GLOVER born 1855 in Fort Donelson, Tennessee and died in 1862.
  3. Sarah Ann GLOVER was born 20 Jul 1861 in Biggsville, Henderson Co, Illinois and married William Stewart BROWN.
  4. Unknown child.
  5. Emma Agnes GLOVER was born 12 Feb 1865 in Tennessee and died 29 Jun 1948 in Arkansas City, Cowley Co, Kansas. Emma married a Mr. HUGHES and had two sons William A. who was born in 1895 in Kansas and Howard R. who was born in 1896 in Kansas. Apparently she was widowed before 1900 as she was alone with her sons when the census was taken in Waltham Twp, Kay Co, Oklahoma. She returned to Reno where she was enumerated in both the 1910 and 1920 censuses. Emma was buried in the Hutchinson East Side Cemetery.
  6. Unknown child.
  7. Elizabeth Alice GLOVER was born 23 Aug 1866 in Illinois and probably died between 1900 and 1910. She was living in Fayetteville District, Fayette Co, West Virginia with her husband, H. R. BAILEY, and three children when the 1900 census was taken. H. R. was born Jan 1862 in West Virginia, the children were all born in Kansas - Grace born May 1892, Ruth born Aug 1893 and Harry born Dec 1895. She may have died prior to May 1948 and she is not mentioned as a surviving sister when her brother Frank died.
  8. John Franklin GLOVER was born 3 Oct 1867 in Marion Co, Illinois and died 22 May 1948 in Hutchinson, Reno Co, Kansas. He is buried in the Hutchinson East Side Cemetery. His obituary in the Hutchinson News-Herald said he was survived by two sisters, Mrs. S. A. Brown and Mrs. Laura Hughes, both of Arkansas City. He was enumerated in the 1900 census by the name John F. but in later census records he was always known as Frank J. and the cemetery records have his name as Frank John Glover.

The Past and Present of Warren County, Illinois by H. F. Kett & Co. Publishers, 1877, indicates that William and Sarah has 8 children, but only 4 were living at that time. The missing two children apparently died very young and no record has been found of them at this time.

William S. Glover applied for a pension for his service during the Civil War, certificate #796935. His service was in Co B 83rd Ill Inf from 2 Aug 1862 to 25 Jun 1865. He was 5 feet 10 inches, light complexion, dark hair, blue eyes, and had been discharged at Ft. Donelson, Tenn. He had resided in the counties of Warren, Reno and Stevens, states of Illinois and Kansas.

I have been unable to locate this family in the 1860 census. They were living in Sumner Twp in Warren Co, Illinois when both the 1870 and 1880 censuses were taken. By 1900 they were living in Hutchinson, Kansas.
