The Social Experiment — and You're Invited!

Have you ever eaten a flower or a velvet apple?

Most people haven't. Not once, in their whole life.

I hadn't either.

I'm not a farmer — Martin is. I'm not a cook, either. I'm just curious. And I've been spending time on a farm forty-five minutes above Davao, watching, tasting, trying things.

Fruit and flowers turned into ice cream. Weeds — the ones most farmers spray to get rid of — in a soup or stir fried. Root crops ground into flour and to be baked into pizza - and pandesal, pasta, wraps - in our mud oven!

Some of this experimentation works beautifully. Some of it I'm still figuring out. That's the experiment — and that part is honestly the best bit.

None of it would be possible anywhere else, because nothing has been sprayed on that land in thirty years. My parents started planting on bare, chemical-farmed ground. It's forest now — thick enough to make its own weather, with thirty-two species of birds living in it. You can eat anything you pick there. There aren't many places you can say that.

One of our guests wrote this after a weekend with us:

"I also got to eat the bouquet of flowers I gathered from the garden. It was a first for me and it was good!"

On 25 September I'm bringing some of it downtown.

Come and taste fruit picked that same morning. Smell and hold the soap, vinegar, sugar, flour we make. Hear how the land grew back — from Martin, who farms it, and from me, who doesn't.

Ninety minutes. Free. Forty seats, and that's the whole room.

And if you like what you taste, I'll tell you about the Sunday in November when a small group of people come up to the farm and make an entire meal from the ground up. No pressure either way —come for the flower.
