You've Planned for Retirement. Have You Planned Your Life After It? Retirement planning often begins with money. Savings. Pension. Investments. Insurance. Tax planning. Monthly expenses. All of that matters. But there is another question that many professionals only begin asking when retirement gets close: What will my life actually look like after my career? For decades, your professional role may have shaped your identity, routine, relationships, sense of achievement and daily structure. When that role changes, the challenge is not always financial. Sometimes the deeper questions are: Who am I without my designation? What will give structure to my days? Where will I find purpose and contribution? What do I want to learn, create or explore now? How do I want my relationships and lifestyle to evolve? What do I want the next chapter of my life to become? I am Maria Pontes, a Retirement Reinvention Coach, Certified Life Coach and Author. I help professionals approaching or navigating retirement move from a role-defined identity to a self-defined next chapter. My work focuses on the human side of retirement: identity, purpose, lifestyle design, daily structure, relationships, contribution, learning, growth, meaning and joy after career. Why I Became a Retirement Reinvention Coach My own retirement journey began years before my last working day. In January 2016, while setting my New Year goals, I realised that I had only five years left before retirement. During a conversation with my HR Head, I was asked two important questions. The first was about my net worth. The second was: What are you actually going to do with your time after retirement? That second question stayed with me. It made me realise that retirement preparation was not only about having enough money. I also needed to understand who I would be when my professional role ended and how I wanted to use the years ahead. That began my own journey of preparation, reflection and self-discovery. In 2020, one year before my retirement, I had another important experience. A colleague had only three months left before retirement and had no clear plan for what she would do afterwards. I had recently completed my Life Coaching certification, so I began coaching her through the transition. By the time she retired, she had greater clarity, confidence and direction about what came next. That experience strengthened something I had already begun to understand: Retirement is not simply a finish line. It is a major life transition. And many people prepare extensively for the financial side of retirement while giving very little attention to the life they are actually going to live. Retirement Planning and Retirement Reinvention Are Different Traditional retirement planning usually addresses questions such as: How much money will I need? Will my savings last? What pension or retirement income will I have? How should I manage investments? These are important questions and should be handled by appropriately qualified financial professionals. My work is different. Retirement reinvention explores questions such as: Who am I beyond my career? How will I structure my days? What matters to me now? What roles do I want to play in this stage of life? How do I want to contribute? What do I want to learn? What relationships do I want to strengthen? What experiences do I still want to create? What would make this next chapter meaningful for me? Financial planning prepares your money. Retirement reinvention helps you prepare yourself. The two can complement each other. Who I Work With My primary work is with professionals who are approaching retirement or have recently retired. You may be a senior manager, corporate professional, educator, government professional, administrator, consultant, business leader or experienced professional who has spent decades building a career. You may be financially prepared and still feel uncertain about what comes next. You may be asking: “I have worked for so many years. What now?” “I don't want to become inactive after retirement.” “My professional identity has been such a large part of my life. Who will I be without it?” “I have experience and energy. How can I use them meaningfully?” “I want freedom, but I also want purpose.” “I don't want retirement to become an endless holiday.” “I want to create a life that is mine, not simply follow what society expects retirees to do.” My work can also support people navigating other major role transitions, including homemakers and empty nesters, but retirement and life after career remain the primary focus. E — Explore Rediscover what matters now. Explore your strengths, interests, passions, curiosity, possibilities and experiences you may not have had time for during your career. This may include: Learning Mentoring Teaching Writing Volunteering Travel Creative interests Health and wellbeing Relationships Community involvement Advisory work Personal projects Entrepreneurship Or simply creating a more intentional everyday life. You do not need one grand life purpose. A meaningful next chapter can begin with small things that matter to you. A — Architect Turn reflection into design. Begin shaping the structure of your next chapter. This can include: Your weekly rhythm New personal roles Relationships Health routines Learning goals Contribution Family time Creative projects Travel Community participation Mentoring Work or advisory activity Personal goals The objective is not to fill every hour. Retirement does not have to mean the end of productivity. It can become the beginning of a different kind of freedom. What I Believe About Retirement I believe retirement should not be treated as the end of relevance. I believe the biggest retirement challenge is not always financial. Sometimes it is identity. I believe you do not need one enormous life purpose to live meaningfully. Small meaningful acts can be enough. I believe retirement can create freedom to learn, contribute, explore and reconnect with parts of yourself that may have been pushed aside during a demanding career. I believe family and cultural context matter, especially in India. But I also believe your entire next chapter should not be designed only around other people's expectations. And I do not believe retirement needs to be “fixed.” It needs to be understood, explored and intentionally designed.
