"Colorful tan" - Moroccan tannery and leather production in Fez (Fine Art Framed Print, limited edition)

Textures, colors and a deep cultural trip. Fez is home to the oldest traditional tanneries in the world. In Morocco, the textile sector comprises two thousand 1,700 companies exporting high-quality leather goods. Artisans in the Medina use 1,000-year-old medieval methods to hand-process and dye leather with natural ingredients like saffron (yellow), poppy (red), or indigo (blue) for example. They were kind to me, specially when they realized I was genuinely interested in learning how they lived. I did a good effort to feel the same as locals in the historic site Chouara Tannery, bearing the putrid smell produced by a mix of cow urine and pigeon droppings to get softness. Real ancient craftsmanship. Raised to stand anything, even a job that would be considered insalubrious in many other places of the world. Nevertheless, I was totally amazed by this millenary labour still kept in contemporary times by those who follow the legacy after generations. A unique story behind the picture.
