Why I Became a Retirement Reinvention Coach My own retirement journey began years before my last working day. In January 2016, while setting my New Year goals, I realised that I had only five years left before retirement. During a conversation with my HR Head, I was asked two important questions. The first was about my net worth. The second was: What are you actually going to do with your time after retirement? That second question stayed with me. It made me realise that retirement preparation was not only about having enough money. I also needed to understand who I would be when my professional role ended and how I wanted to use the years ahead. That began my own journey of preparation, reflection and self-discovery. In 2020, one year before my retirement, I had another important experience. A colleague had only three months left before retirement and had no clear plan for what she would do afterwards. I had recently completed my Life Coaching certification, so I began coaching her through the transition. By the time she retired, she had greater clarity, confidence and direction about what came next. That experience strengthened something I had already begun to understand: Retirement is not simply a finish line. It is a major life transition. And many people prepare extensively for the financial side of retirement while giving very little attention to the life they are actually going to live. Retirement Planning and Retirement Reinvention Are Different Traditional retirement planning usually addresses questions such as: How much money will I need? Will my savings last? What pension or retirement income will I have? How should I manage investments? These are important questions and should be handled by appropriately qualified financial professionals. My work is different. Retirement reinvention explores questions such as: Who am I beyond my career? How will I structure my days? What matters to me now? What roles do I want to play in this stage of life? How do I want to contribute? What do I want to learn? What relationships do I want to strengthen? What experiences do I still want to create? What would make this next chapter meaningful for me? Financial planning prepares your money. Retirement reinvention helps you prepare yourself. The two can complement each other.
